CONTEXT:
This weeks episode did not seem very mainstream, and was mostly focused on the white characters other than any of the other ethnicities, there were still three African Americans this week, yet they did not really have much of a role at all in this weeks episode. Christina Yang, an Asian character did have a few main roles, but other than that the only African American that really had a role was the chief. They were not subject to hardly any intimate close ups this week and race did not play a role in this weeks episode.
RULE:
There was not any direct racism or views of the “black image in the white mind” during this episode other than the fact that the African American characters were not necessarily a part of this episode. This does show thought that they were not in the mix, and probably just put in the episode to show that they are there.
ANALYSIS:
No black characters were central during this episode, there were few interactions between them, and it’s almost as if they were not needed in this episode.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, this shows how African Americans are sometimes viewed in today’s society. They are given a part, yet not one that is always recognized by society. The show does not acknowledge these gaps, and acts as if they do not even exist. I think that is because the producers did not see a need for a plot between these characters for this episode.
